Seeing the evolution of the wrestling fan from when I began watching as a three or four-year old in 1990ish to the fan in 2020, Ronda Rousey is beyond justified in saying wrestling fans are "f---ing ungrateful." She also referred to wrestling matches as "Fake fights."
These comments have caused so much outrage in the wrestling world that Nia Jax has said she would risk her job and knock Ronda Rousey out if she returned to the WWE. One can only hope that Jax is joking because Rousey would put her in a hospital.
Based on Jax's omments, it looks like the wrestlers themselves are almost as bad as the fans. I say almost because the wrestling fans of 2020 are a different breed. And that's not a good thing.
Think back to 1985 and the first WrestleMania. A sold out Madison Square Garden ready to see Hulk Hogan and Mr. T take on Rowdy Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff.
Wait!!!!!!!!! What's that? Mr. T headlining WrestleMania? The star from The A Team? Clubber Lang from Rocky III? What is Vince McMahon thinking? It will never work! Mr. T doesn't deserve that spot! He's not a pro wrestler! That actor shouldn't be anywhere near a wrestling ring!
Yes! That would be the reaction of the 2020 wrestling fan. Not seeing the big picture, but regurgitating the nonsense that "wrestling journalists" like Dave Meltzer publish in their dirt sheets.
The first WrestleMania was a gigantic success and shot the WWE to No.1 in the wrestling world.
Remember the Eric Bischoff era of WCW? It was marked by the WCW vs nWo angle that included the entire company, but celebrities also played a role. Most notably, NBA superstars Karl Malone and Dennis Rodman. The mainstream coverage that WCW got during this time was unlike anything they could have done pitting any two wrestlers against each other. Bischoff couldn't buy the coverage he was getting on ESPN and broadcast TV, and it was all free. Malone and Rodman even carried the angle into their NBA Finals matchup between the Utah Jazz and Chicago Bulls.
If that were to happen in 2020, the fans would boo Rodman and Malone out of the building because in the eyes of today's fans, they didn't earn it.
This is why Rousey is justified. Rousey is invaluable to WWE just like Brock Lesnar is. And Lesnar is another wrestler that the snowflake 2020 keyboard-warrior wrestling fan hates.
But at the end of the day...
Rousey will likley be back in the WWE very soon and she's a heel. So she's acting like a heel, but also speaking truth.
